When you’re ready to plan your next vacation, South Dakota probably doesn’t come to mind. It isn’t known for being the most exciting vacation state in the country!

However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a visit. You just have to know how to get the most out of everything this state has to offer. That means traveling in an RV!

South Dakota is a surprisingly exciting place to visit as long as you’re able to drive around in an RV and visit various places across that state.

Cool Mountain Carvings

plan your next vacation

When most people head to South Dakota, they head straight for Mount Rushmore. It’s a must-see if you’re going to be in the western portion of this state, especially since it’s part of the Black Hills. There are tons of camping opportunities and chances to spend time in nature.

However, don’t think Mount Rushmore is the only mountain carving there is to see. Make sure you check out the Crazy Horse Memorial too! It’s nearly 10 times bigger than Mount Rushmore. It’s even cooler because it’s still under construction. You can actually get a feel for how much work it takes to carve silhouettes out of the rock.

Custer State Park

plan your next vacation

While you’re in the area, make sure you swing by Custer State Park. Not far from the Crazy Horse Memorial and technically part of the Black Hills, it’s a far cry from much of the rest of the state that is flat. It features granite peaks and mountain waters in between rolling plains. It features over 70,000 acres so you can bet there are tons of things to do that include:

  • Watching the wildlife
  • Camping
  • Biking
  • Swimming
  • Fishing
  • Kayaking and canoeing

Badlands National Park

plan your next vacation

Much of what there is to do South Dakota can be found in the west, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to check out in other areas of the state as well. In an RV, you can see it all!

Located in the center of the state is Badlands National Park. It is known for its rugged beauty that attracts visitors from all over the world.

With 244,000 acres, it is home to animals like bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets. There’s also a night sky program that allows you to gaze at the stars in all their glory inside the park.

Falls Park

plan your next vacation

You know there is plenty of prairie in South Dakota, and because of this list, you know there are plenty of rocky features as well, but did you know South Dakota has waterfalls too?

Falls Park is located in the eastern portion of the state. It’s a great place to visit because it’s just north of Sioux Falls, providing you with quick and easy access to city amenities.

South Dakota isn’t boring at all! That is, as long as you’re able to travel the state in an RV. Plan your vacation around these stops and you’ll agree that this state is a very underrated vacation destination.
